Styling The Supremes
The V&A are paying homage to The Supremes and the designers Bob Mackie and Michael Travis by housing a collection of outfits that the girls wore while at Motown Records.
The people behind this look at Motown records cleverly marketed the girls through the use of images; using top designers from the decade who dressed Hollywood. One of the designers Bob Mackie dressed Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand as well as The Supremes.
Michael Travis dressed The Supremes in showy designs which include the famous 'Butterfly' dresses on show that are included in the exhibition. The dresses were fabulous with miles of sequins and beading that would have at today's prices ranged from £7,000 to £13,000. These lavish gowns were matched by big wigs, big eyes (false eyelashes) and big earrings probably to match the big personalities of the group.
