Tanya Ling is not a conformist; her drawings are not the arch typical fashion illustrations of forgettable beautiful women instead a slight hint of her, deep melancholy filled eyes set alongside her ghostly figures. Tanya studied fashion design at St Martin's college of Art but changed direction to becoming an illustrator. What makes her so endearing and individual as a woman illustrator is her approach of mirroring herself in her drawings as opposed to using an ideal model of the moment. Her work stands out so dramatically because; not only is she is a women, but she's a mother and she combines all attributes of femininity in her work, the drawings are not untouchable, the clothes look like clothes and you sense them and feel the texture through her personal depth of work. It isn't a sleek illusion which fashion is renowned for therefore it's not surprising that she's working with a clientele ranging from Marc Jacobs, to whom she has done the latest collaboration for Louis Vuitton, through to Victor and Rolf, Lanvin and Jil Sander all of which are pushing boundaries between fashion and art. What's more she has managed to be both on Vogue and Harpers and Queen by any means a great accolade. Fundamentally she is a modern illustrator and fulfils today's niche by transferring from paper to the internet her drawings most notably as a contributor to Creativebase.com, all of which she takes in her stride. Examples of her work are included in a recent book on fashion illustrations, ' A hundred years of fashion illustration' by Cally Blackman.
