Joan Didion, for the unfamiliar, is one of the greatest modern American writers. Her non-fiction and reportage on all aspects of contemporary culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries is some of the most beautiful and incisive writing around. Her social commentary stretches from profiles of sociopaths to watching five-year-olds on acid at 1960s Californian festivals. Her most recent book, The Year of Magical Thinking, is comprised of dark extracts from her diary in the years succeeding her husband's death. This has since been turned into a play, which is now showing at the National starring the fantastic Vanessa Redgrave. The NT are providing daytime tickets to for a mere £10. Pittance for a chance to see this seminal collaboration between two legendary women.
