Never in a film have I felt so middle class, it seems to me though that this is entirely the point of Adulthood, I have never seen Kidulthood, so I had not basis for comparison; but I do know that through out the film I was very aware of how different and alien I was to the realities on screen. This is definitely not a bad thing, by pulling the viewer out of their comfort zones; Adulthood is able to really tackle social and political syndromes of today, such as gun crime and youth culture.

Noel Clarke, the Renaissance man, reprises his role as Sam Peel, fresh from a stint in prison, during his first day, Sam realises that someone is after him in revenge for the killing of Trife. Supported by the amazing Scarlett Alice Johnson, a.k.a Lexi, Sam attempts to fight for his life and repair the damage that he has done. We see Sam not only tackling with the demons that he has to face in the present, but also those that he has had to face, Clarke’s desperation as Peel, is haunting and even a little traumatising. Yet the best performance in the film has got to be that of Adam Deacon, who plays Jay, a tortured youth, who single-minded hatred threatens to tear his life apart, his performance was so believable that I now check when going down dark alleys…

You do not have to see Kidulthood to understand the plot of Adulthood, it is a simple, yet gripping, and is a testament to the directory of Noel Clarke. I did not expect much when first going to see the film, but I have to say I was blown away by the excellent cast and the isolation that it made me feel. If you have doubts about seeing this film, put them aside.
