You may have missed season 3 of American Dad when it was first shown on TV. I certainly did. The good news is that, come 12th May, you can rush out and buy the whole thing in one fell, ill-advised swoop. The bad news is that if you're one of those, like me, that missed it on purpose, you won't really care. The latest sixteen episodes of this mind-numbingly middle-of -the-road series continue in a familiar vein to the first 42, i.e. like a slightly feeble version of Family Guy with added 'satirical' content (the characters say things like 'CIA,' 'terror law,' and 'George W. Bush'). The basic premise? Stan Smith, the eponymous Dad, is a CIA agent, and big and stupid. His wife (I forget her name - I think you're supposed to) is blonde, shallow and also stupid. He has two zany kids, a goldfish, and a pet alien called Roger (largely a borrowing from Futurama's alcoholic robot Bender), and each episode his lazy bigotry sends everyone on a variety of crazy adventures that illustrate the quirky sickness of modern life. This seasons hilarious antics include Stan convincing his wife she's murdered her best friend (haha!), Stan infecting the town's cattle with BSE and Stan getting all his neighbours evicted. The quest for 'edgy' humour is evidently growing more desperate, and less entertaining.
Wikipedia tells me there's a 4th season on the way so the American Dad sweatshop must be doing something right but after sitting through the whole damn series I'm still at a loss as to what that something is, and I really, really hate Stan (not in a funny way). I won't be queuing outside HMV on the twelfth, but don't let that stop you, whoever it is that buys this stuff.
