Be Kind Rewind
Another Michel Gondry film to delight and confuse us, this particular one centres around real life place of Passiac, where the Be Kind Rewind video and thrift store owned by Mr Fletcher (Danny Glover) is falling on hard times. While away on a memorial trip for Fats Waller, all the video tapes in the store are mysteriously erased; in step Mike played by Mos Def and Jerry played by Jack Black, who start to create 'sweded' video tapes.
These 'sweded' tapes show us that all you need to make a movie is imagination and a few everyday items; they poke fun at the heavy special effects seen in today's movies, and how ridiculously far the film industry will go to protect their own interests. Not only this, but it demonstrates how a film is a piece of public property; by representing the real people who live in Passiac, these people have a real sense of community despite the decline of their city, and it is nice to see that the film actually had a beneficial effect upon the city.
The beginning of the film is confusing and it does take sometime to get started, but once you have pushed through this, Gondry brings all factors together to create a film that you can easily follow- unusual for Gondry. However, he does leave the ending open, to tantalise and mystify the audience, could there be a Be Kind Rewind 2? I doubt it… unless Mos Def, Melonie Diaz and Jack Black decide to make their own 'sweded' movie. This film is not Gondry's best, but it does inspire you to go into your garden with your video camera, and recreate the films that you grew up with, all it takes is a little imagination.
Be Kind Rewind was released 10th June.
If you'd rather not see the film, then Jerry and Mikes video's can be seen on the official Be Kind Rewind website www.bekindmovie.com
