When the trailers for this film were first flashed across our screens a few months ago I'll be the first one to admit my lack of interest. Looking like another average-if a tad predictable-teen rom-com the film screamed mediocrity.

Pretty much out of nowhere the PR machine shifted gears and suddenly the name ‘Juno’ was on the lips of more than just your spotty adolescent on a cheap date to his/her local cinema. Then an even stranger thing happened, the words ‘Oscar nomination’- words almost never used about films in this genre-were being associated with what I had earlier dismissed as another waste of my time on par with last year's tragically bad ‘Date Movie’.

Of course all this attention immediately meant that I had to see this film. I was still amazed and intrigued as to why a film such as this had gained such critical acclaim.

The plot revolves around 16 year old Juno. Having convinced her best friend, Bleeker (played by the ‘so geeky its endearing’ Michael Cera) that some pre-marital copulation is a good idea she is shocked to find out she is ‘with child’. The rest of the film follows her as she negotiates the minefield that is teenage pregnancy.

This film was written for Ellen Page who plays Juno and the Oscar nomination is rightly deserved on this performance. Her wry and dark delivery of the brilliantly written lines shows a maturity that belies her youthful appearance.

Page exudes this amazing coolness that makes you wish you lived in suburban America with her so you can bask in her sarcastic and hilarious outlook on life.

The cast that surrounds her fit that characters perfectly. It seems that director, Jason Reitman had a lucky day when it came to casting but it was more likely that the amazing script drew all these fine actors together.

The performances that are so commanding will do well to compete at the Oscars this year. It doesn’t matter if anyone picks up that golden statue though. The fact they got the nomination in the first place was a godsend. It convinced me to see a film that I would have surely waited till it came to TV and I loved it, and i'm sure i’m not alone.
