Smart People.

Smart People, is released in England on the 16th May, it stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Dennis Quaid, Ellen Page and Thomas Haden Church. The story revolves around widowed professor who has become disengaged with his life that is until he meets a lovely doctor in the form of Sarah Jessica Parker.

Quaid is a very strong lead, throughout the film, you empathies with this lonely character, who spends most of his time alienating the people around him. There is an exceedingly good chemistry between himself and Thomas Haden Church, who plays his freeloading wayward brother. Unfortunately, SJP and Quaid lack chemistry, you do believe that these people are engaged in a tempestuous relationship; in fact SJP comes across more as a borderline schizophrenic. She is not a strong lead, and by the end you are not wholly sure why these two people have decided to stay together.

Ellen Page, stole the movie, as the overtly mature young daughter, who is not only dealing with growing up, and the uselessness that comes from her father's new relationship, marry this with a little bit of incest, and you have the most entertaining character ever.

All in all, I was quite disappointed by SJP, I don't think it is really any fault of hers, she is a very capable actress, I just don't believe she will ever be able to throw off the shackles of Carrie Bradshaw. The script wasn't very strong - this is meant to be an intelligent comedy, but I found a lot of tired and overused clichés .How many times have we seen a partnership between a serious lead and his more jovial carefree counterpart, Sideways which starred Haden Church is an example that springs to mind. This film is excellent if you want a DVD to rent, but it's worth seeing the brilliant talents of Ellen page who hold this film and more importantly the family together.
