Freedom is an ideal that cannot be grasped by Carter Page III.
Although he is bred from 'great men', Page is nothing but a mere
walker - a camp accessory to high class women.  Woody Harrelson's
walker stalks the entire film in the background, attempting to stay in
the shadows never daring to reveal his true self. Not even till the
end does polite and sophisticated Page really start to crack. This
crack widens and finally swallowing Page, allows him to accept himself
as a homosexual, and also as a mere accessory… a pawn if you will.

To watch Page's growth, is entertaining to say the least; you cringe
at what appears to be the naivety of such a well mannered, well
educated man, you forgive him; however because he is not naïve he has
succumbed to the reality of his walker existence. The world of
American politics that he inhabits is superficial, with ever-changing
trends and secrecy. Carter Page is pulled into this world of American
politics, a world that to him was merely the catty gossip and back
biting of politicians' wives; with the murder of an acquaintance and
the implications that would have upon one of his clients, Lynn
Lockner, played by the talented Kristen Scott Thomas. You are never
sure as to what kind of relationship Lynn and Carter have, there seems
to be an attraction, or perhaps it is a mutual respect bred from the
uncontrollable situation that both are pawns to, nonetheless the
companionship of both characters is questionably touching.

The film illustrates the tight rope that is American political
culture, where men who can one minute be considered crooks, and in the
next can be heralded as saviours and heroes. Although Page does not
wish to dabble too deeply in this world, he must, to ensure that he
does not lose his true self.
