The X Files: I want to believe.

The motion picture version of the popular sci-fi series the X-files is brought to you by the same artistic creators, including director and writer Chris Carter. Extreme hype and expectation has surrounded the film since being announced in production as long ago as November 2001. With the long wait and the excellent writing team behind the scenes one would expect the film to live up to the excitement, sadly I feel it misses the mark.

Set six years after the series finale, stars of the strange Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny return as Mulder and Scully who are brought in once again to investigate the abductions of young women. They are aided by Billy Connolly who plays a disturbed paedophile priest ravaged by visions of the crimes. Although prior knowledge of the series is not vital, some background information would be useful in understanding the who's who of the FBI world as the narrative is at times haphazard and slow-moving. Although the producers have insisted on the strength of the feature as a stand alone film it would perhaps serve better as two single episodes, one following the abductions and one following the disabled boy. Neither storyline seems to logically link together, with the former seeming only present to further Scully's character development and not the main sequence of events.

All is not bad however with a rise of humour awoken in rapper Xzibit's performance as Agent Mosley Drummy, his 'furrowed brow' method of acting giving Brando a run for his money. On a serious note, the film did do well to create suspense and is mildly enjoyable, helped along mostly by the famous X-files musical riff that is used frequently throughout, however sometimes too obviously 'mickey-mousing' the action. An additional treat is in store for the will-they wont-they questioners of Mulder and Scully's tantalising relationship, but I wont go into too much detail, as neither do they, disappointingly.

Do you want to believe? Do I want to believe? Did I believe in this movie? Not really.
