Moshi Moshi Night Preview – Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen – 24/04/08
For it is that time of the month again, as label of the moment Moshi Moshi decamps to Hoxton for it's monthly showcase. Having had superstars in the making Lykke Li and El Guincho grace the event in previous months, they generally provide a sure fire new favourite band discovery opportunity.
This month is no different as South West London's The XX bring their less consciously cool take on The Kills, coupled with an ace shoe gaze version of Womack & Womack's Teardrops.
However it is Moshi Moshi's latest recruit that provides the real treat of the evening, this treat is in the form of Florence and the Machine. Florence was discovered by singing to Mairead Nash of Queens of Noize fame for half an hour in the toilets of the Soho Revue Bar. It was this chic version of the X factor that has set Florence on her way.
Soulful and schizophrenic blues accompany odes of domestic violence and eye slicing. Not the most upbeat topics granted, but Florence posses a voice that defies her waif like figure and will hug, hit or lift you up as it sees fit.
Though going to this gig does come with a health warning, you will be overcome with an insatiable urge to watch FATM play again and again. This is because the real draw of this act is not the voice or the fact every gig feels like an event, it's that however many times you see FATM play the last time is always the best!
Moshi Moshi's Night takes Place at the Hoxton Square Bar And Kitchen on 24th April from 8pm. £7 on the door. The Label also releases Florence and the Machine first single Kiss With A Fist on 9th June.
