Radio Soulwax Presents:
Soulwax Nite Versions, 2manydjs & Part of the Weekend Never Dies @ The
Southbank Centre!
Last night Radio Soulwax descended on perhaps what's the most unlikely
of venues for a party like no other. The Southbank Centre and its
Royal Festival Hall played host to the electro masters and a screening
of their new film, Part of the Weekend Never Dies, a joint venture
that's co-directed by Saam Farahmand and Soulwax themselves. Its UK
premiere was followed by a rave only Soulwax could throw.
Part of the Weekend Never Dies served-up a truly frank depiction of
rave culture 2008 style. In between crisp clippings of wild Soulwax
gigs, it gives us the party behind the party, a series of interviews
with everyone from the boys themselves, to the wild male groupie who
can't help but strip and bare all live on stage at every Soulwax night
he can reach. Plus an insight into backstage good-times, Soulwax
style. Refreshingly, the films unafraid to mention all time no-no's,
that is, the presence drugs, drugs and more drugs, as ever the
accomplice to any early hours partygoer. And of course, it's not the
numerous VIP rooms that are given the credit in this picture; it's the
hoards of crazy Soulwax fans worldwide and their unrivalled commitment
to the Belgian brothers whose names on all of our lips, David and
Stephen Dewaele.
Cleverly cut snippets effortlessly skipped between infamous sets
gracing festival tents and club spaces across Europe, in Japan, New
York and beyond. Forget the stereotype of hazy rave footage – the
clarity and overall quality of film is astonishing, considering the
conditions under which it's shot.
The screening left viewers itching to dance and the credits see the
2,500 seat Royal Festival Hall audience disembark, simultaneously
making quick maneuvers towards the floor where special guest Raton is
ready and waiting with a string of minimal bangers. Within half an
hour the auditorium rivaled even the busiest of festival tents as
viewers became ravers and set a scene of hands-in-the-hair,
jump-up-and-dance party mayhem.
Later of course our hosts give us a taste of the good stuff with a
live Soulwax show, followed by a jaw dropping set from 2manyDJs. If
only London Kicks didn't have to report back to you good people, you
could be damn sure we would have stayed to the bitter end. After all,
it's not often you get to let loose inside one of the capital's finer
institutions until 2 in the morning, is it?
