Golden Silvers

North Londoners Ben Moorhouse, Gwylim Gold and Alexis Nunez comprise Golden Silvers and exist in the paradoxical genre of not belonging to a genre at all. They have been described as everything from agit-pop to the English Vampire Weekend, but noone is quite sure where their sound is coming from, but happy they its coming from somewhere. Having recently won the opportunity to play Glastonbury via the festivals New Talent competition and being championed by everyone from Rob Da Bank to the Queens of Noize, it seems things are on the up for this year old band.

They also run a successful club night called Bronze Club, which arises monthly at the Macbeth in Hoxton. Described splendidly by the band themselves as a “Glorious battleground for new music” it sees Golden Silvers headline each month. More evidence that it is simply not enough now to have a few good tracks, but a new act need something more to offer the listener as thousands of new bands fight for the coveted spot on your Ipod.

What Golden Silvers appear to do is source numerous influences from the past such as doo wop of the sixties, The Squeeze and a small dash of 80’s post punkers Orange Juice flowing through everything. This is then jumbled up and made as current as possible.

Forthcoming debut single release ‘Arrows of Eros’ is as a perfect example of the bands selling point. They do not wait till the chorus to hook the listener in, the song’s attitude appears to be why wait when it can be done from the first note. The track is built round a brilliant keyboard lick that reminds me of the ‘monster’ stopping his victim in his tracks, by appearing out of a manhole in those brilliant 80’s comedy horrors like Beetlejuice and the Gremlins. This being coupled with a lovely swooning vocal and harmonies galore, ‘Arrows of Eros’ is really as infectious as they come. This has the unique ability to sound as good at 7:30 in the morning on a packed Central Line as it does sound tracking your pre night out drinks.

Golden Silvers are anything but a one-trick pony, ‘Lily the Lover’ is quite possible the catchiest song I have heard all year, sounding like the musical equivalent of running down the stairs after too much tequila. Plus ‘Dream Girl Nightmare’ hugs you as lovingly as the Kinks do on a cold November morning.

This band are indeed a reviewers nightmare, without the safety net of a pigeonhole for me to push them into easily, one must think outside the box. I could try to invent a pretentious genre for them to exist in solely. However it is probably best to simply say that if hook laden, instantly likeable music is your preference then Golden Silvers could be your new favourite band.

The next Bronze Club is at the Macbeth on18th July and their debut single Arrows of Eros is out on 14th July on Young and Lost.
