Don't Panic just Dance!
One Friday night in 2006 I discovered a penchant for crawling around ye old Camden town; so with April 2008 drawing to a close, it was only apt that I crawled again. On Friday 18the April, London Kicks decided to head down to Don't Panic Dance, a new club night at a new Proud, to see what the fuss was about. I am still quite dubious whether this club night actually had anything to do with the crawl but what a musical riot it turned out to be.
With my queuing skills polished and drinks in tact all I needed was the bands. The live music meets club night extravaganza boasted acts such as The Clik Clik, Lykke Li, Kid Harpoon, Kennedy and The-O. Taking to the decks and putting the dance floor in a spin were Dollop DJs, Blaise Bellville, Ronojoy Dam, Cleft Palettes, Styleslut VS Cage the Elephant, Mucha Marcha Coalition, Jodie Harsh and Scottee.
The first act to grab my attention was Kid Harpoon accompanied by his band The Powers that be. When Kid Harpoon launched into 'Riverside', the crowd in a chaotic but rhythmic fashion crossed the dancefloor. What could have been a mosh pit felt more like a barn dance and beckoned me to get my folk on! As an energetic Kid Harpoon strummed his guitar, the notes kept flowing as the crowd kept dancing. A personal highlight of the night was his performance of 'Milkmaid'.
If you hadn't noticed the Clik Clik are a bit hot right now. The Clik Clik are a London 4-piece with a lot of talent. The 30 minute set was fun packed with songs such as 'Did me wrong', 'Went to a party' and the infamous 'My dunks'. I didn't spot any dunks that night but the gentlemen shoes, patent high heels and hi-tops present, tapped away to the beats. The winning formula of The Clik Clik is that they tell it like it is; their songs are anecdotes, little pockets of theirs and your past. As song lyrics fell out of Stefan and Maya's mouths I was concerned that my miming was on time and word for word right. With each song I slipped into a memory, still appreciating how well Stefan's rapping complemented Maya's singing and impressed by Dru and Henry's drumming and guitar skills, respectively.
Don't let anyone tell you different, Lykke Li can dance. The Swedish songstress threw down moves on par with Beyonce's infamous 'Crazy in Love' dance and naturally hidden amongst the crowd, I copied her. For the best part of her set, an enchanted crowd were most definitely a little bit in love with her. On the surface Lykke Li comes across as, of course, a female singer with, a soft, sultry voice but wait a while and your ears will prick up on hearing snippets of brash, far from submissive, unadulterated lyrics. Lykke Li is on an extensive tour until the end of summer so there is still plenty of time to see her performing tracks such as 'Let it fall' and 'Dance Dance Dance'.
If you want to be in the know about the latest hot new bands, then be sure to pencil in Don't Panic Dance, on the blank lines of the third Friday of each month in your little black diary. To find out more about the night you can watch exclusive interview footage on LKTV. If you missed the debut Don't Panic Dance then fear not, its back this Friday at Proud.
