How long have you had this room?

The kitchen is the oldest, since 1978.

What do you have on your walls?

Margaret's room: apple white emulsion, a framed Victorian overmantle mirror, a fashion illustration by a student at CSM, an embroidered panel of a mother and child by my mother and an illustration by a friend from Goldsmith's – Diane Bates.

What is the most precious object in your room?

The Red Room: In terms of monetary value, a piece for Peruvian weaving from 1290 BC. For sentimental value, a silver Victorian wedding posy holder, which is a family heirloom.

What do you love most about your room?

Margaret's room: My mother, who died three years ago, still seems to be there. This makes me feel safe.

What do you hate about your room?

I wish the garden room was a bit wider.

How does your room reflect your personality?

Garden room: It feels optimistic. I love to collect beautiful objects. I am interested both in their artistic merit and the memories they evoke in me. I like to arrange things like they're still lives.

What is the strangest thing in your room?

Bathroom: A bowl of decorated eggs.

Do you collect anything?

Yes, I'm a magpie. Textiles, lace, postcards, ceramic teapots, porcelain, glass, shells, scent bottles…

What's the most expensive thing in your room?

Red room: A Victorian etching of Romeo and Juliet.

Why did you choose the colour for the walls?

I hate commercial bathrooms. I find them uninviting and cold. I want stimulation and beauty to transport my imagination. Every time I go in I revisit an old friend, like re-reading a book.

What can you see from the window?

Red Room: A yellow canariensis rose bush.
